A River Runs Through It

“Poets talk about spots of time, but it is really fishermen who experience eternity compressed into a moment. No one can tell what a spot of time is until suddenly the whole world is a fish and the fish is gone.”   – Norman Maclean

To the casual stroller or cyclist along the Willapa Hills Trail or the intrepid kayaker during the seasonal high water season, the Upper Chehalis River offers myriad opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. Fed by the rains in the Willapa Hills of west Lewis County, the Upper Chehalis River meanders through high-walled cliffs, over rocks and through pastoral farmlands on its way to meet the mighty Pacific Ocean at Grays Harbor.

Flowing gently by Owl and Olive, the upper Chehalis River offers opportunities to fish, photograph or just enjoy the water. Take advantage of our Day Pass, and park at the farm while you hike or bike the trail, ride the rapids or just sit on the bank and watch the natural world go by.

Travelers note: The Chehalis is a rain fed river, with water levels fluctuating season to season. Be sure to check water depth and fishing regulations before planning your trip.  The United States Geological Survey maintains a streamgage on the property, monitoring water flow on the Upper Chehalis.  The Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife is the authority on local fishing.
